Ever had a “What was I thinking?” moment while doing a DIY project? Well, I sure did when I decided to take on our dining table without much of a plan. Picture this: a few years ago, armed with nothing but enthusiasm and sandpaper, I set out to refinish our old dining table. Spoiler alert: it didn’t go well. The stain job was a disaster, and we ended up living with a splotchy mess that looked more like a DIY crime scene than a dining space. This story has a happy ending. Join me as I recount our journey from a DIY disaster to a dining table delight that we now absolutely adore.
Starting Over: The Stripping Process
Determined to fix my past mistakes, we began the restoration process. Our first step was to remove the failed finish using Citristrip, a safer stripping gel that promised to lift the old polycrylic without harsh chemicals. We slathered the table with multiple thick layers of Citristrip, then covered it with a plastic tarp, letting it sit for 24 hours to do its magic.
The Power Washing Pitfall
Feeling optimistic, we took a power washer to the table, expecting it to strip away the remnants of the stain easily. However, not all plans work out, and the power washer barely made a dent or started to strip some of the veneer. It was back to the drawing board, and we decided to switch tactics.
Scraping and Sanding
Switching to a scraper, we manually removed the softened Citristrip and polycrylic layer. This method was far more effective. After scraping, we gave the table a quick power wash to get rid of any lingering stripper residue. We let the wood dry thoroughly before moving on to sanding. Using a power sander, we meticulously smoothed the surface, removing any residual stickiness and preparing it for a fresh start.
Staining Success
This time around, we opted to skip the wood conditioner and went straight to using a gel stain. The gel stain promised a more forgiving application, suitable even without pre-conditioning the wood. With a hopeful heart, I brushed on the gel stain, let it set for about a minute to penetrate the wood, and then wiped off the excess, revealing the beautiful wood grain beneath. We repeated this process in areas where the stain didn’t take as well, ensuring an even finish.
Sealing with Polyurethane
The final step in our table’s transformation was applying a coat of polyurethane to seal and protect the wood. This added a durable finish, ensuring that our table would withstand the rigors of daily use without succumbing to stains or scratches.
The Final Reveal
The result? A fresh, blotch-free dining table that looks brand new. It’s a far cry from the splotchy, uneven surface we’d become accustomed to. This project taught us valuable lessons in patience, proper preparation, and the importance of choosing the right products for each step.
