Supplies
1/2 mdf // 1.5 inch studs // 18 gauge nail gun // wood glue // wood screws // wood filler // table saw // rip saw // liquid nails
We’ve all seen vaulted ceilings and the new style of ceiling trays with 10′ ceilings. It provides a room with so much space. For most of us, we are left with our 8′ ceiling boxes that make the space feel small. Where 8′ or less ceilings are concerned, we want our eyes to look up and the faux ceiling trays bring your focus up. Coupled with a wallpaper, you’re bound to look up first before you look any where in the room.
Dimensions
The trays with the 1.5 inch wood to secure it plus the 1/2 mdf made the trays drop about 2 inches from the ceiling. I wouldn’t go any bigger that 18″ from the wall with the tray, if you are working with a smaller room.
Step by step
1. Cut 2 inch strips of mdf for the “drop” part of the tray.
2. Cut 18 inch of mdf for the “run” of the tray.
3. Use wood glue and finishing nails to secure the corners together. Use wood filler for the gaps and sand down the seams. I like to use clamps to get a good binding.
4. I used scrap wood to add reinforcement to the tray.
5. Attach 1.5 inch studs to the ceilings.
6. Attach the trays to the ceiling with liquid nails and finishing nails.
